The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) busted three storage centers located in Bangkok and Samut Prakan and confiscated 14 million baht worth of fake toothpaste, cosmetics, and brand-name bags last week.

The operation came after a famous Thai toothpaste manufacturing company filed a complaint with FDA that their products have been counterfeited and are being sold widely in markets and online, Pol. Maj. Gen. Anan Nanasombat, commander of the Consumer Protection Police Division (CCPD), told a press conference on Monday, February 13th.

The FDA and CIB then swooped in first at two houses in the Nong Bon sub-district and another on Soi On Nut 70/1. Both premises are in Bangkok’s Prawet district, according to Maj. Gen. Anan.

The third raid took place on February 7th at a warehouse in the Bang Phli Yai sub-district of Bang Phli district, Samut Prakan province. One Chinese national identified only as Mr. Zhong was found at the warehouse. The man claimed he only followed orders from Chinese investors to pack and send goods and had no idea the products were fake.

Zhong was arrested and charged with having fake cosmetics and other products in possession with intent to sell in violation of the Cosmetics Act and the Trademark Act.

In total 67,430 items worth over 14 million baht were impounded from the three sites, Maj. Gen. Anan revealed.

The officer continued that the counterfeit products were sold via 18 online stores.

Meanwhile, Veerachai Nalawachai, FDA deputy secretary-general, urged citizens to buy only products that are registered with the Commerce Ministry and do not have a suspiciously low price.
