  1. Thailand’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) on January 5th  reported a total of 241 road accidents, with 253 injuries and 25 deaths, on the seventh day (January 4th) of the ‘New Year’s Seven Days of Danger’ road accidents campaign.Surat Thani had the highest number of accidents (79). The highest number of injuries was in Kanchanaburi (81). Chiang Rai has the highest number of fatalities (15).
  2. Chinese tourists will be arriving in Thailand on the first flight of tourists in almost three years on January 9th, 2023.

Chinese tourists are being marketed by Thailand to come back as ‘Revenge Travelers’.

Three airports in Thailand are preparing to welcome at least 20 flights from China per day in the first three months of 2023, effective January 11th, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT).

3. An influential Thai virologist said new Covid-19 strains from tourists traveling from the West are more worrisome than older strains from tourists traveling from China.

Dr. Yong Poovorawan came out, January 6th, to allay Thai people’s concerns over a surge in Covid-19 infections in light of China’s upcoming easing of travel restrictions from January 8th onwards.

4. The first Full Moon Party of 2023 was held at Rin Beach in the Baan Tai sub-district, Koh Phangan district.

This first Full Moon Party of this year welcomed more than 20,000 tourists which has generated at least 100 million baht.

5. Thai royal doctors stated that Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendiradebyavati still has not regained consciousness due to her heart conditions.

Her Royal Highness remains unconscious, said the bureau, and is receiving antibiotics under close monitoring.
