Railway officials briefly suspended the train services between Hat Yai and Khlong Nagae in Southern Thailand’s Songkhla province yesterday, January 3rd, after the discovery that over 325 bolts on the railroad track as well as another five sleeper plates were removed.
Mr. Ekarat Sriarayanpong, director of the Public Relations Center of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), informed the public yesterday that he was notified of the missing of several railway track parts at the track between the Hat Yai and Khlong Naga stations in Songkhla’s Hat Yai district at 8:55 AM.
Upon examination, the railway officials found that 325 bolts and five sleeper plates on the track had been “removed.” Subsequently, a security unit was called in to inspect the track to determine the cause of the incident.
Earlier last year, a cargo train operating between Hat Yai and Padang Besar in Malaysia was derailed by an insurgent group bombing the track. The group also detonated another explosion while maintenance workers were repairing the damaged track, resulting in three casualties.
Services on this route went into operation again on New Year’s Day only to be suspended again shortly on January 3rd.
