Thailand has been recognized as a world leader in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic by Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesu, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Dr. Tedros recently said in his letter addressed to Thai Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul that he thanks Anutin for “Championing the Universal Health and Preparedness Review (UHPR).”

In addition, Dr. Tedros informed Anutin that Thailand has been instrumental as one of the first countries globally and the very first country in the South-East Asia Region to pilot the UHPR initiative for public health emergencies and its handling of the COVID-19 crisis.

The WHO chief cited many of Thailand’s critical assets that largely assisted and protected its population and residents during the COVID-19 pandemic. These assets included promoting strong multi-sectoral coordination, having an effective public healthcare and health insurance system with a dedicated workforce, and innovative approaches to advancing health.

DR. Tedros also recognized Thailand as a guideline model for WHO members to follow in preparation for emerging diseases.
