Seoul, South Korea –
At least 149 people were killed and dozens were injured in Seoul’s Itaewon district when a massive crowd, estimated to be more than 100,000 people, were gathering to celebrate Halloween Saturday night, October 29th.
According to local media, the crowd were trapped and crushed in a narrow alley near the Hamilton Hotel, a major party spot in the city. The crush reportedly began after some people fell over and caused others to fall down on another like dominoes, causing them to be unable to move or breathe.
About 50 people suffered from cardiac arrest while a hundred others had breathing difficulties. According to the rescue authorities, most of the dead and injured are in their 20s.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol presided over the emergency meeting on Sunday and ordered immediate first-aid administration and treatment to the people in the area.
As of this morning, the confirmed number of the deceased was announced as 149 people with 79 injures. This was also considered the deadliest crowd crush incident in the history of South Korea, according to local media.
