National –
The National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC) on Thursday, October 20th, had acknowledged and cleared the way for the merger of two largest mobile network operators, True Corporation and Total Access Communication (DTAC),
The decision was announced late Thursday evening after more than 10 hours of discussion. The voting ruled 3:2 in favour of the plan. However, according to the NBTC statement, the merger must be done with conditions which include a set of price ceilings and price controls based on average cost pricing.
True, which currently holds 34 percent of customers, and DTAC, which has 21 percent of subscribers, would merge under a new company that would hold about 54 percent of the local mobile communications market while their competitor AIS now holds 44 percent.
The networks would continue to use its current names for the next three years after the merger announcement before they could come up with the new company’s name.
