Pattaya —
A 67-year-old British driver who was dozing off inside his parked sedan reportedly got spooked by concerned Pattaya police before speeding away and crashing into a Thai woman.
The collision that mystified Pattaya police took place at the entrance of Soi 6/1 on Sukhumvit Road in the Nongprue subdistrict of Banglamung, Chonburi, yesterday, October 13th in the afternoon.
Pattaya police told local media that they went to check on an MG sedan parked at the Khao Talo intersection. They found a British driver identified later as Mr. Martin Rionas, 67, sleeping inside the car and felt concerned, so the police knocked on the car window to awake the driver.
However, Mr. Martin was reportedly startled by the presence of Pattaya police once he woke up. He then sped his sedan away, swerving badly, according to the police report, and crashed into a Thai woman named Ms. Savitree Seesun, 25, who was offering food to a monk on the side of the road.
Ms. Savitree was slightly injured and was admitted to Banglamung Hospital. Her red Nissan sedan was also damaged by the British driver. Mr. Martin was reportedly confused and refused to give a statement to the press.
Pattaya police said they would have him take an alcohol test to find if he was inebriated and Mr. Martin was taken to the police station for a further investigation, although was not immediately charged.
