Chonburi —

The historic, traditional buffalo race, which had been hosted in Chonburi from October 1st to 9th, 2022, officially came to a close.

The race took place on an old-school long dirt track in front of Chonburi City Hall. As expected, the annual event attracted hundreds of spectators both domestic and international alike who cramped the stands to watch as the buffalos mounted by one contender each sped through the air to hit the finish line.

While the race represented a fun, energetic event for spectators, many contenders take this tradition seriously, as there is prestige and prizes involved. The buffalos, which in the old times were used for agricultural purposes, were trained and placed on special diets prior to the competition to ensure that they were in prime health. This was why the buffalos seen in the pictures looked so athletic and nimble.

After the event, people went to shop at rows of local food stalls and played at a little temporary theme park to have the last fun of the day before the event officially ended.

The buffalo race was held in Chonburi for the 151st time over decades, though it never lost its charm, as many still said this event was a really big success. The race will return again next year one day before the end of the Buddhist Lent Day on October 10th. Stay tuned!
