Pattaya —

Malaysian tourists toppled Indians in terms of the number of foreign tourism arrivals in Thailand, while 4-5 million tourists visited Thailand in total from Q1 to Q3, the director of the Pattaya Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) said.

The meeting led by Mr. Prawan Saekoo, president of the Eastern Thai Hotels Association, and Ms. Anoma Wongyai, director of the Pattaya TAT, was arranged yesterday, August 30th, at Amari Pattaya Hotel to assess the tourism situation in Pattaya and Thailand.

According to Ms. Anoma, the overall tourism situation was improving greatly since the Covid-19 pandemic as seen by over 4-5 million tourists who arrived in Thailand from the start of 2022 to August 27th.

The first place in terms of the number of arrivals fell to Malaysian tourists, who accounted for about 600,000 people, while Indians dropped from the first place to second with 430,000 people, the TAT director stated.

The third place belonged to Laotian tourists and the fourth to Singaporean tourists with 200,000 people.

TPN notes that it is likely at least some of these “tourists” from countries like Laos may have actually been coming to look for work.

Most tourists decided to visit Pattaya after the country’s official reopening and most Covid-19 restrictions were gone. There were also 5.7 million domestic tourists and 450,000 foreign tourists who traveled on the weekends during the first six months of 2022, according to the TAT director.

Ms. Anoma pledged that she would try to boost domestic travel as much as possible, focusing on persuading tourists to travel every day by arranging fun and intriguing activities and more.
