Bangkok –

The Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) is planning to discuss the possibility to announce Covid-19 as a communicable disease under surveillance at the next meeting on Friday, August 18th.

General Supot Malaniyom, secretary-general of the National Security Council (NSC), told the press on Thursday that the CCSA committee would consider the Public Health’s proposal of declaring Covid-19 as a communicable disease under surveillance.

Moreover, the meeting would catch up on border reopening at several checkpoints nationwide after they had been reoperated for more than a month. The vaccine and drug distributions would also be discussed at Friday’s meeting.

When being asked if the CCSA would be dissolved by October 1st if the disease was categorized as a communicable disease under surveillance, General Supot stated that it would depend on the situation despite the easing announcement.

“If necessary, exclusive laws and regulations must still be implemented to control and prevent the spread of the disease,” the chief added.

Additionally, General Supot appeared to infer that there were no plans to drop the unpopular emergency decree, in place since April of 2020, at this time. Critics claim the decree is being used to stop potential pro-democracy protests, however, the government claims the decree is needed for administrative-related procedures as part of Covid.

Finally, the General also said that the Tourism Authority of Thailand had not officially come forward at this week’s meeting to propose extended nightlife hours in certain tourist areas and also added that this was debatable if it was the jurisdiction of the CCSA ad may need to go through a formal process to become legal. It was possible, however, that it could become a late addition.
