An Indian national was arrested at Suvarnabhumi International Airport after reportedly attempting to smuggle several species of live protected animals, including a fennec fox and marmosets, to his home country on Tuesday, August 16th.
Prasert Sornsathapornkul, Director of the Division of Wild Fauna and Flora Protection under the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plants Conservation, revealed that airport security detected abnormalities, presumably to be living things, in a passenger bag of the Indian passenger around 11:00 PM. on Tuesday.
Wildlife and Suvarnabhumi Animal Quarantine officials then began the search and found six types of protected wildlife, totaling 17 animals, hiding in plastic baskets inside of a bag that was fully packed with food and snacks.
The animals included a fennec fox, a raccoon, eight marmosets, three monitor lizards, two green skinks, and two albino pythons.
The 21-year-old Indian passenger, who was later identified as Abilash Annaduri, was captured for legal proceedings. He was initially charged with exporting wild animals and prohibited goods without permission, violating the country’s Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act and the Customs Act.
The suspect had no comment about the find.
