Thai Police remind public that seat belts will be mandatory for all passengers, to be put in effect in early September

National –

The Metropolitan Police Bureau reminds the public of the new regulation to order all passengers in vehicles to wear seat belts throughout the journey as published in the Government Gazette in May last year.

Deputy Commissioner and spokesman Jirasan Kaewsangek stated on Thursday, August 11th, that the regulation is a part of the Road Traffic Act No.13 which will be put into effect on September 5th.

Apart from the seat beats, the law also includes a kids car seat or a specialized seat to be provided for children under six years to reduce serious and fatal injury risk. The legal and safe seat design will be announced later after the Royal Thai Police’s consideration.

The Deputy Commissioner said: “The Royal Thai Police will release a full law shortly. If it can be done by September 5th, the official implementation will be flexible within 90 days and the law will be announced immediately. As for the austerity, the police will initially give warnings in order to inform the public during the first period of the implementation. We would not prioritize the arrest and would consider case by case.”
