Thailand’s number of Covid-19 infections has not yet reached its highest level in current wave, top virologist says

National –

Thailand’s top virologist Dr. Yong Poovorawan stated online via his Facebook account today, July 14th, that the current sixth wave of Covid-19 in Thailand has not yet reached its peak and will gradually rise at the end of this July and throughout August.

According to his statement, the number of hospitalized cases, by proportion, would be approximately 10 percent or less while the fatality rate would be no more than 1 percent of those hospitalized cases, or likely to be 0.1 percent or less of the total infections which this number is declining to close to the flu.

Dr. Yong wrote: “Due to the seasonal high number of people infected with respiratory diseases, the number of hospitalization cases and deaths would be significantly increased.”

Even though there are tens of thousands of infections, only patients who received treatment at hospitals and are reported to the Ministry of Health will be officially reported which is about 2,000 people a day and the fatality rate will be at an average of 20 people a day.

“The death rate will be in proportion to the total number of tens of thousands of infections, which is definitely higher than the fifth wave because most of the current cases are asymptomatic or have few symptoms,” the doctor added.

He encouraged that high-risk groups should be fully vaccinated to reduce symptoms and if found to be infected, they should be given antiretroviral drugs immediately to reduce the chance of hospitalization and fatality.

Dr. Yong stated that restrictions, mandates, or closures of businesses were not needed, however, to manage the current wave of infections.
