More than 6,000 packs of illegally-imported foreign cigarettes confiscated from foreign national in Bangkok

Bangkok –

More than 6,000 packs of foreign cigarettes, worth more than 4 million baht, were confiscated at a company and a house in the Bang Khae district of Bangkok on Saturday, June 18th.

The raid was conducted following a search warrant issued by the Thonburi Criminal Court upon Krua Baan Cha Teochew on Kanlapaphruek Road and a house on Rama 2 Road of Bang Khae Subdistrict.

A number of 644 large boxes of illegally-imported foreign brands of cigarettes, totaling 6,440 packs and worth more than 4 million baht were discovered and confiscated.

According to the Bang Khae police, the investigation began when a large number of foreign cigarettes were reportedly smuggled to avoid tax collection and sold in the Bang Khae area. Concerned citizens alerted Thai authorities of the illegal cigarettes and loss of tax. Upon the raid, Chinese national Mr. Su, 39, claimed to be the house and company owner and told the officials that he held verification documents. However, he could not present them to the officers and later claimed he had “temporarily misplaced the licenses”.

Initially, Mr. Su was charged for assisting in concealing and/or selling items that have not been through customs formalities. All of the properties in dispute were transferred to the Royal Thai Police for further investigation.
