Bangkok’s Deputy Permanent Secretary Narong Ruangsri and 262 representatives from related private and public agencies joined the “Bangkok Project: Smoke-Free Prototype Metropolis” workshop and conference on Monday, June 13th.
The project is a cooperation between the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), the National Network for a Smoke-Free Thai Society, and the Health Professions Network for a Smoke-Free Thai Society to build public awareness of smoking and initially build the first ‘Smoke-Free Thai Society’. It introduces workshops and training in 6 district groups across the capital.
The operation results will be concluded and presented to the National Tobacco Products Control Committee in Bangkok. The proposal, if approved, will be developed into a plan and applied in the capital as a model of a smoke-free metropolis before further implementation at the regional and, eventually, global levels.
More than 260 representatives from the Environment Department, Community Development Education Department, BMA schools, Bangkok Health service centers, local communities, and representatives from universities had participated in the conference which included lectures on the topic of proactive tobacco control and action plans to create a smoke-free city.
“Building an understanding of the dangers of smoking cigarettes and e-cigarettes will also build awareness and may help reduce or, eventually, stop smoking in individuals. This training will strengthen network synergies to jointly develop Bangkok to become a smoke-free metropolis and reduce air pollution problems,” the Deputy Permanent Secretary said.
