His Excellency Mr. Phankham Viphavanh, Prime Minister of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic, and his spouse have arrived in Thailand for an official visit as guests of the Royal Thai Government on June 1st – 2nd.
This marks the first visit of the Prime Minister of the Lao PDR who will attend an official welcoming ceremony and have a bilateral meeting with Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O’Cha at the Government House in Bangkok.
Yesterday morning, Mr. Phankham received an honorary doctorate degree in political science from Maejo University in recognition of his prominent role in the socio-economic development of the Lao PDR before attending a welcome ceremony from the Thai Government at the Government House at around 5:00 PM.
Both leaders exchanged viewpoints on the business connections and opportunities between the Thai and Lao private sectors in terms of trading and investment cooperation.
They will also discuss key factors of bilateral cooperation, including the Strategic Partnership for Growth and Sustainable Development, the facilitation of cross-border transportation to promote economic activities and livelihoods of people living in the border areas, and the regional connectivity and infrastructure development.
The solutions to the problems of illegal border-crossing, transnational crimes, drugs, anti-human trafficking, and call-center scammers will also be mentioned during the two-day visit.
Additionally, representatives from the private sector of Thailand and the Lao PDR will primarily discuss how to fully utilize the potential of the Laos – China Railway for the benefit of both countries as well as the region as a whole. The regional and sub-regions cooperation in the Mekong Sub-regions will also be discussed to promote and drive the Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (ACMECS) in the sub-regions as potentially and sustainably as possible.
