More than a million foreign tourists arrive in Thailand since January, government expects tourism income to reach 1.8 trillion baht by year end

Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O’Cha was pleased with the number of incoming foreign tourists in Thailand after reaching more than one million since the country began to reopen from January, expecting tourism income to reach 1.8 trillion baht this year.

Government spokesperson Thanakorn Wangboonkongchan reported today, May 23rd, that while the domestic rate of Covid-19 infections was gradually decreasing, the number of tourists visiting Thailand had reached 1,016,103 people from January to May 2022.

This resulted in the number of tourists in the first quarter of 2022 increasing by 2,368 percent, compared to the same period in 2021, and the revenues increasing by 1,424 percent.

The Prime Minister expected the announcement of the “Visit Thailand Year 2022-2023” policy in the second and third quarters of this year would encourage quality foreign tourists from around the world to visit Thailand with at least 300,000 people per month and 1,000,000 tourists per month in the fourth quarter. It is expected that there will be at least 5,000,000 tourists by the end of 2022.

The spokesperson also reported that the number of domestic Thai tourists taking at least one trip had also increased to be as high as 71,210,525 people during January-May, accountable for a 69 percent increase which stimulating income for the tourism industry. The government expected that domestic tourists will be encouraged to travel within the country by at least 160 million people (trips) by 2022, generating an income of at least 656 billion baht.

“The government was confident that the policy of reviving the economy through tourism by reopening the country would facilitate and attract more tourists to visit the country. We expected that the tourism industry would generate an overall income of more than 1.3 to 1.8 trillion baht this year,” Thanakorn added.
