Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O’Cha will be welcoming Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on an official visit to Thailand between 1-2 May, aiming to strengthen the relationship between the two countries, which is the first prime minister meeting between them in Thailand in the past nine years.

Government spokesperson Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana revealed today, April 28th, that the Japanese leader will be visiting as a guest of the Thai government. This will be Mr. Kishida’s first visit to Thailand after taking office and will be the Japanese Prime Minister’s first visit to Thailand in 9 years since the latest visit of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2013.

Additionally, this year marks the 135th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Japan and the anniversary in which Thailand has participated as the coordinating country in the ASEAN-Japan relations (2021-2024). Thailand will also be hosting the APEC meeting at the end of the year as well, the spokesperson stated.

The Japanese Prime Minister is scheduled to discuss official matters with General Prayut on Monday, May 2nd, at the Government House. The meeting will include general topics in terms of economy, security, sub-regional and regional developments, and cooperation to revitalize country’s under challenging situations, especially the Covid-19 pandemic. Both leaders will also exchange views on the international situation and witness the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between Thailand and Japan.

TPN notes multiple human rights and activist groups have urged the Japanese Prime Minister to address several issues in Thailand to the Thai PM, including the right to assemble and protest for pro-democracy protesters, but there has been no sign this will take place.
