Drunk driving spikes on second day of seven dangerous days during Songkran, 301 road accidents, 47 people dead, 292 injured

The Department of Probation reported today, April 13th, of 923 cases of drunk driving on the second day of seven dangerous days with a major year-to-year increase in drunk driving. 

Vittawan Sunthornkajit, the Director-General of the Department of Probation, revealed the statistics of the road cases which had gone through the probation process yesterday (April 12th) consisting of 1,123 cases/arrests. Of that, 195 cases were drugged driving, 5 were reckless driving, and over 923 involved drunk driving with two people obliged by the court to wear an EM bracelet.    

Surin and Ubon Ratchathani had the highest number of drunk driving cases, each with 95, Nonthaburi had 90, and Bangkok had 77. In fact, the number of drunk driving cases on the second of the seven dangerous days this year was 98% higher than the previous year’s 18 cases. For the overall road accidents today, 301 cases were reported with 292 injured and 47 casualties. Of that, 36.88% was attributable to high-speed driving, 25.25% to drunken driving, and 18.60% to sudden cut-off.

The province with the most accidents was Khon Kaen. The most injured people were in Khon Kaen and Nakhon Si Thammarat, and the most casualties were in Nakhon Ratchasima.      

The Director-General added that the Department of Probation offices across the nation were working together with the operators and volunteers, a total of 2,254 people stationed at public service spots, community checkpoints, and traffic checkpoints to minimize potential damage.
