Chonburi –

A monk has sustained several injuries while attempting to cross a crosswalk (zebra crossing) in Ban Bueng after being hit by a hit-and-run motorbike rider this morning (April 6th).

Emergency responders were notified of the incident at 7:30 A.M. on a crosswalk on the Chonburi – Ban Bueng Road in Nong Samsark.

They arrived at the scene to find the monk, who goes only by his first name of Settapong, sitting on the crosswalk. He had sustained various injuries and his alms bowl was found nearby that had been knocked out of his hands. He was taken to a local hospital.

The motorbike of the driver who hit him was lying nearby, but the rider had fled on foot prior to media and law enforcement’s arrival.

Monk Settapong told TPN media, “I was heading back to my temple after receiving food offerings (Alms, which monks perform daily). I was walking on the crosswalk when the motorbike rider, a young man, hit me.”

A witness, Mr. Panuwat Dissabanjong, 18, told TPN media, “The monk was crossing the crosswalk when the motorbike rider hit the monk. The motorbike rider stopped briefly to speak with the monk, apologizing and claiming he was sleepy, but then disappeared from the scene before police arrived.”

The Ban Bueng Police are tracking down the motorbike rider for further legal action. Monk Settapong is expected to fully recover from his injuries.
