Pro-democracy doctor Tosaporn submits letter to Thai Prime Minister yesterday to demand Emergency Decree cancellation

Bangkok –

Dr. Tosaporn Sererak and a 13-year-old pro-democracy activist who was charged for violating the Emergency Decree submitted a letter to the Prime Minister and the Council calling for the cancellation of the Emergency Decree yesterday, March 29th, claiming that the decree was implemented to favor the military government and to stop protests and pro-democracy movements.

The pro-democracy activist/doctor told reporters that the Emergency Decree, which had been extended until May 31st, was in his opinion only done to prevent public opinions and protests among those who opposed the government and it did not potentially control the spread of Covid-19 as there were still new and increasing numbers of daily infections, critical patients, and fatalities every day.

Tosaporn stated at a press conference: “In the past two years of declaring the Emergency Decree throughout the kingdom, more than 1,417 people had been prosecuted in 629 cases for violating the Decree from political demonstrations and movements.”

“It clearly showed that the Decree was aimed to be used against citizens who come out to fight for democracy and justice and not just to stop Covid-19,” Tosaporn claimed.

Moreover, Dr. Tosaporn also noticed whether the emergency decree enforcement may also benefit a certain group of government officials, including increasing military service periods and pensions or exclusive auctions/procurement/employment among certain military officers. Therefore, he urged the Prime Minister and related agencies to investigate and monitor the matter.

The Thai Government, meanwhile, has officially continued to maintain its view that the decree was needed to properly control Covid-19 and ensure smoothness of operations across multiple organizations and bureaus and stated it is not to stop protests or for people to express their opinion.
