Progressive Movement leader Thanathorn announces ‘Bob Kittisak’ as candidate for Pattaya Mayor

Pattaya –

Progressive Movement leader Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit has announced ‘Kittisak “Bob” Ninwattanatochai’ as their candidate for the Pattaya City Mayor during the upcoming mayoral elections scheduled for May 22nd, the first mayoral election in about a decade.

The announcement was held at the Bali Hai Pier last night around sundown (March 14th).

Mr. ‘Kittisak “Bob” Ninwattanatochai’, 47, was born and raised in Pattaya where he has lived basically all of his life and has seen the town grow into one of the busiest tourist cities in the world, at least prior to Covid-19. He used to work in financial offices at well-known banks in Thailand and has been a freelance photographer.

Mr. Kittisak stated at the press conference “We want to solve the main problems in Pattaya which in my opinion is neverending road construction, flooding problems, and to restore the tourism sector, the economy, and further develop the city. Covid-19 has decimated many lives and businesses and there continues to be a struggle to allow all sectors of business and tourism to fully open and restore the economy.”

The latter comment, TPN notes, appears to refer to the nightlife and bar sector, which is still technically legally closed (although operating as converted restaurants with additional rules and restrictions) and controversial or not is a pivotal part of the Pattaya economy.

Thanathorn stated from a stage at Bali Hai, “Bob has worked with the progressive movement for three years. He is new to politics, having never been involved previously, but he has a lot of experience in management. Importantly, he was born, raised, and a lifelong resident of Pattaya and very familiar with the city’s unique economy, growth, and importance to tourism.”

The Election Commission of Thailand yesterday, March 14th, has announced the election day for Bangkok Governor and Pattaya Mayor on May 22nd, 2022. TPN notes that current mayor Sonthaya Khunplume has NOT officially stated his intention to run for mayor but is widely expected to do so. He was appointed to the role in late 2018 when Thailand was still under “coup” rules by now Prime Minister Prayut Chan O’Cha. See our article below for more about the upcoming election.
