The Thai Culture Minister is quite sure that his elder brother Sontaya Kunplome, the current Pattaya mayor, will be a candidate for the next Pattaya City mayor.
TPN media notes that although many people have assumed Sontaya would run for the position in May, he has not officially announced he will be doing so yet, instead dropping only “hints” about the future direction. Sontaya was appointed as mayor of Pattaya in September 2018 by Prime Minister Prayut Chan O’Cha when elections were still frozen due to a military coup stemming from 2014, if he runs this will be his first time actually running for the role.
Elections for Pattaya have not yet been formally announced but is nearly certain to be at the end of May and will be the first elections in the city in about a decade for mayor, a position that is one of the most important in Thailand due to Pattaya’s prominence as a tourism and economic destination for the Eastern provinces of Thailand. Reporters asked Mr. Itthiphol Khunpluem today, (March 11th) if his elder brother Sontaya Kunplome will be a candidate for the next Pattaya City Mayor and he said, “I am quite sure that he will be a candidate. He is still working as the current Pattaya City Mayor.”
“He told me ‘they’ are ready to apply to the relevant agencies for Pattaya City candidates. However the name of the exact candidate will be confirmed and revealed later.” Itthiphol stated.
“Mr. Sontaya is willing to continue his plan to develop Pattaya City. Pattaya City is also in the EEC (Eastern Economic Corridor) development plans. I am sure that they (a political group aligned with Sontaya) will send someone from their team for the election to continue thier jobs.” Itthiphol concluded.
