Reader Talkback Results: What actions, if any, should Thailand take regarding the current Ukraine/Russia situation?

The following is our exclusive weekly feature in which we ask our readers a news topical question and then give you a week to answer it on our various channels, compiling a diverse range of answers and opinions to present to you, our valued readers. Here are the results from our last question…

Last week, we asked you the following:

What actions, if any, should Thailand take regarding the current Ukraine/Russia situation?

Some context around this question:

The top news story in most of the world currently is the situation in Ukraine after Russia invaded the country. TPN is not an international news publication and so our coverage of the events has been strictly focused on how, if at all, the conflict will affect Thailand.

As a result, we have seen many comments on our social media of people who feel that Thailand should take a stronger stance to condemn Russia’s actions, with various suggestions and opinions on how.

Others, however, have stated that Thailand should stay out of it or is likely to do nothing.

So, what are your thoughts? SHOULD Thailand do anything further? If so, what should they do?

Here is what you, our readers, had to say as our editors selected some of the most diverse responses to highlight different points of view. Obviously, we can’t post everyone’s opinion here so selected a variety of the most diverse opinions. As always, the opinions and statements below are the reader’s own and may not reflect those of TPN media. There were MANY diverse responses this week. There have been minor edits for spelling and grammar only:

Peter R-They could offer to take a number of refugees for a limited time until they can return home.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Kyle I-Assist those Russians and Ukrainian tourists and ex-pats currently in Thailand with the assistance of their embassies, especially those stuck without flights or funds, and help their citizens stuck in Ukraine or Russia, but largely stay out of the actual conflict. (Editor’s note-this is largely what is currently happening.)

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Michael H-No easy answer because many Russians come to Thailand for short and long stays.

Thailand desperately needs tourists.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Mr. Anon- Ban all Russian tourists and ex-pats from Thailand immediately and deport them.

-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-

David P-They should work with and assist the task forces that are freezing Russian oligarchs’ assets and condemn the violence and violations of UN international law.

-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-

I.H-Call out America for basically doing the same thing in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Lybia, and many others but being hypocritical here. How many people did US bombs kill in these countries, kids, women, and innocents? Or do they not matter?

–=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

Daniel L-Thailand should ban visas for Russians/Soviets. That is the minimum that Thailand should do.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Ray S-Thailand doesn’t have a dog in this fight. Why get involved with sound bite condemnations? Let the farangs wring their hands over this shit.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

G.H–

In my opinion, most Russians are not happy with the war nor with Putin.
It’s just another dictator the world should get rid of.
With this aggressive raid, he signed his own death.
After this is over there is no room anymore for Putain on the world stage.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Martin P-Block the airspace for Russian planes like a lot of countries do.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Albert N-Ukrainians have killed 13,000 since 2014 in Donetsk and Luhansk… But nobody cares, yes?
-=-=-=-=-=-=–
Luis H-In consideration of the actions, that have been taken against the junta in the neighboring country of Myanmar, this question seems to be naive.
-=-=-=-=-=-=-

James W-Evacuate their own people… the only thing to do. If going further, allow a huge fleet of US marines.

-=—=-=-=-=-

Phil T-None whatsoever! It would be spectacular hypocrisy if the government here took any kind of action! Thailand can have no moral authority over any other country after mercilessly crashing the tourist and hospitality industry, and by so doing punishing hundreds of thousands of their own people by first scaring them half to death, then forcing them out of work or out of business, and continuing to do so for the last two years, with no end in sight! The situation between Russia and Ukraine is also extremely more complex than being portrayed in the media, however, and this current situation has been brewing for a decade, not only fuelled by Putin’s actions!

-=-=-=-=-=—

Zrenko- Mind their own business
