Bangkok –
Pro-democracy protest leader, Parit “Penguin” Chiwarak, was granted temporary release by the Bangkok South Criminal Court this afternoon, February 24th, with a deposit of 200,000 baht.
The bail followed the Court’s request yesterday to present the evidence of his enrollment at Thammasat University along with his class schedules and the university letter before they would reconsider the bail request.
Parit, who had been in prison for 200 days, was held in custody for charges of royal defamation, or Section 112’s lese majeste and sedition for staging a crop top protest in downtown Bangkok last year.
Under the Court’s release condition, the activist must not take part in any political movement that threatens the law, cannot post any provocative messages on social media that may cause conflicts in the country, cannot do any actions that offended the monarchy, and cannot leave the country.
He is also prohibited from leaving his accommodation from 6:00 PM. to 6:00 AM of the following day and must wear EM bracelets to track his current location at all times. The release would be effective for three months and he must present himself to the Court on time of the appointment on May 24th at 10:00 AM.
