Family of Greek tourists demands case update after about 4,900 Euros of theirs reportedly stolen in late January in Phuket

Phuket –

A family of Greek tourists arrived at Karon Police Station in Phuket yesterday, February 2nd, for following up on a case of stolen money of 4,900 Euros (about 183,600 Thai Baht) that had been reported on January 26th.

According to the previous report, the cash was stored inside a sedan parked at a parking lot of a condominium in the Mueang district between 8:00 PM. on January 25th and 2:30 PM. on the 26th. The family then filed complaints at 5:10 PM. on the same day but there was reportedly no update on the investigation.

As of 10:25 AM. yesterday, tourist Alexandros Alexiadis, 35, along with his family members and local translators arrived at the police station to inquire about the progress of the burglary case.

All of the five family members arrived on the island on December 26th, 2021, under the “Test&Go” scheme. They had been traveling to Thailand several times in 10 years but had never been involved in any cases. They decided to meet investigators for an update yesterday as they were scheduled to return home on February 25th.

Mr. Alexiadis told reporters from the associated Thai press: “I took the money out of the room because maids would come inside for cleaning and the hotel staff told me that the safe box in the room was not working, so I put the money in the car. I didn’t know that it could be kept in the office safe box.”

“The thing that bothered me the most is there were CCTV cameras installed at the parking lot and the entrance. But our car was parked in a spot where the cameras couldn’t capture. Until now, condominium staff still didn’t allow us to see the CCTV footage and that caused me more concern. Instead, they showed less enthusiasm and told me to accept the fact that the money had been stolen and let it go. Personally, I refuse to accept this, it is a significant amount of cash.”

Karon police chief Theerawat Liamsuwan stated that the investigators had examined the scene, observed footage of CCTV cameras, collected fingerprints, and questioned possible witnesses to find leads and track down the suspect. He insisted that the police did not neglect their case and he would directly take care of the case in order to expedite the capture of the thief for legal procedures.
