Former golf champions ready for season-opening Thailand Mixed

Cha-Am, Thailand-

Ex-champions led by hot-shot Sadom Kaewkanjana have confirmed their participation in the Bt3 million Thailand Mixed hosted by TrustGolf due from February 10-13 at the Springfield Royal Country Club in Cha-Am, Petchaburi.

Fresh from snatching his second Asian Tour trophy in Singapore 8 days ago, the 23-year-old from Narathiwat who won the season finale Thailand Mixed at the Aquella Golf and Country Club in December will spearhead the stellar field of entrants including two-time winner Prom Meesawat, the only female winner Arpichaya Yubol and the youngest victor Ramil Saelim, 17, into the season-opening event of the Thailand TrustGolf Tour.

“I used to have a practice round once at the Springfield. It has a good layout and tough greens. However, it’s not a long course and it should suit my game,” said Sadom who beat Wichayapat Sinsrang by two strokes in the previous Thailand Mixed edition in Phang-Nga.

“Even I’m the winner in the last Thailand Mixed, I don’t set the goal to win the next one. I’d rather use this tournament to work on my shots which I will need when I play in overseas tournaments,” added Sadom who bagged a total of five titles in 2021.

Sadom, the current Thai No 1 player, plans to enter the European Tour and PGA Tour Q-School series later this year. He’s determined to improve his driving distance from an average of 290 yards to over 300 before he switches his attention to the two big tours.

“If I can hit further, it will create me more opportunities when I play overseas,” said Sadom who is ranked No 153 in the world, the best position among Thai players this week.

Prom who lifted up two Thailand Mixed titles last year, one at the Alpine Golf Resort in Chiang Mai with Chapchai Nirat and the other at the Black Mountain Golf Club in Hua Hin, will play his fourth event of the year at the Springfield after three successive starts on the Asian Tour.

“I always like to play the Thailand Mixed as it has a unique scenario. To have the women in the field makes this tournament different from others as not only you can exchange your opinion with them but you can learn their game,” said the 37-year-old two-time winner on the Asian Tour.

“My plan for 2022 is to play mainly on the Asian Tour and on local tours on some occasions. I will focus on the fitness aspect to keep myself strong for the entire year,” added Prom, also known as the “Big Dolphin”.

Arpichaya, who won three titles including two Thai LPGA crowns last year, still remains the only female winner in the Thailand Mixed when she beat Atthaya Thitikul in the inaugural edition at the Black Mountain last February. She hopes to redeem her pride after missing the cut at the Aquella.

“I will start my year at the Springfield. I just hope to make the cut first as I didn’t play well at the end of 2021. So, I really worked hard in the off-season by focusing on my putt and physical and mental aspects,” said Arpichaya who eyes on earning cards on the Ladies European Tour and LPGA Tour this year.

Teenage Ramil, the only amateur who won the Thailand Mixed at the Lake View Resort and Golf Club in Cha-Am last October, is in fact committed to the training with the national team but will manage to make his appearance at the season-opener.

“I will enter fewer tournaments this year to devote my time for the national team. I’m pretty happy with my results last year and I gained a lot of experience from several tournaments. I have good memories in the Thailand Mixed and hope to produce some good results again,” said the protégé of Chapchai Nirat.

The first Thailand Mixed event of 2022 features a field of 132 players who will compete in a four-day stroke-play format with only the top 60 and ties, after 36 holes, moving forwards to the weekend rounds.

The Thailand Mixed is organized by TrustGolf, an indoor training center with advanced technology. It is supported by the Sports Authority of Thailand, the National Sports Development Fund, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Bangkok Bank, B.Grimm Company, Bond Holdings, AISPLAY, Bridgestone, Trust Pharmacy, Trust Live Streaming,  the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration, Springfield Royal Country Club and S.Khonkaen.
