Thailand’s Covid-19 alert now raised to level 4 due to rapid Omicron spread, Public Health Ministry announces

National –

Thailand’s Public Health Ministry announced that they have raised the Covid-19 national alert from level 3 to level 4 this morning, January 6th, due to the rapid spread of the virus, especially the Omicron variant, in the country.

Public Health Permanent Secretary Dr. Kiattibhoom Vongrachit said at a press conference that the alert has been raised after the number of domestic infections had rocketed from under 3,000 a day over the past few weeks to 3,730 yesterday and then to 5,775 today.

The lever 4 alert also comes with tighter restrictions and measures, including the closure of high-risk places, travel reduction as well as Work From Home, group activities limitations, and several others under the Covid-free setting and universal prevention measures. Solid details on specifics, however, will be revealed at a major meeting tomorrow, January 7th, 2022, from the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration.

Although the number of patients with severe conditions and the fatalities was decreasing, the daily infection numbers rapidly increased after the New Year holidays due to the loosing of measures in modified entertainment venues, partying, or gathering activities for religious purposes, the Permanent Secretary noted.

Dr. Kiattibhoom stated: “People who came back from other provinces were highly encouraged to monitor their symptoms for at least 14 days. It would be better if they can also work from home, especially in the first week. They should regularly do the self ATK test so that we can find the infection and control the spread quickly.”

Additionally, as mentioned, the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) general meeting as chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O’Cha is scheduled on Friday, January 7th, for the Covid-19 situation assessment and the possibility of tightening preventive measures.
