Surin’s annual “Elephant Fair”, held between December 15th to the 26th, was ordered canceled from December 18th to the 19th to prevent the spread of Covid-19 with measures from the Provincial Communicable Disease Control Committee.
Governor Suvapong Kitiphatpiboon released the official announcement of the cancellation of the “Miracle Of Surin Elephants Fair 2021” for preliminarily 2 days to prevent the spread of Covid-19, following critics on social media responding to photos from the fair that appear to show overcrowding of people who were participating in the event without performing proper social distancing and other health measures.
Kiattipoom Wongrachit, the Permanent Secretary of the Public Health Ministry, later stated that the fair was held with a huge crowd of attendees, causing the potential risk of the spread of the pandemic. The provincial Communicable Disease Committee, therefore, ordered the temporary suspension in order for the organizers to improve the preventive measures under a COVID Free Setting.
The public health medical personnel in Surin were also ordered to closely monitor the event rearrangements. If they were not able to do so, the event would be canceled for good.
“Organizing any events in the province must be authorized by the provincial Communicable Disease Committee, chaired by the governor. If the committee considered that there were actions that may cause the risk of the pandemic, the provincial governor has the power to order the cancellation of the event, prioritizing the safety of the people in the area,” the Secretary concluded.
