The President of the Thai Hotels Association Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi pleaded with the Thai government not to lockdown or close borders as the tourism and hospitality businesses have come to a dead-end, according to her.
She stated to the Associated Press this afternoon, December 6th, 2021, that the hotel and tourism business sector urged the government not to re-implement lockdowns, business closures, or border closures in the country after the first known case of the Omicron variant was reported in Thailand on Sunday as their businesses have not yet fully revived since the country reopening on November 1st.
“If there is another country lockdown, the hotel and tourism business may not be able to handle it anymore. The reopening of the country on November 1st has given us hope, so we ask the government not to shut down the country again and preventive measures should be issued and specific solutions that don’t involve punishing businesses or the hospitality sector should be done instead,” Marisa said.
The President further continued that the sector has always well-cooperated on the country reopening scheme and followed the government instructions and preventive measures at all times in order to continue running their business effectively under the spread of Covid-19.
However, the business sector will also need more clarification from the government within 1-2 weeks regarding the details of the Omicron variant and of how fast and severe the variant is, and whether the current Covid-19 vaccines could effectively help prevent serious infections, hospitalizations, or deaths.
