Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan ordered the Center for Air Pollution Mitigation (CAPM) to push a plan for a PM(Particulate Matter)2.5 dust particle solution as a national agenda and use law enforcement against potential major sources of the dust.

Deputy Spokesperson Kongcheep Tantravanich stated to the press that the order of the Deputy Prime Minister was due to the country’s current dry weather with stabilizing winds that may cause the accumulation of dust particles from cross-border smog, wildfires, car pollution, open burning of industrial waste, etc.

The Air Quality Index in some areas across the country was found to exceed the Thai standard and was starting to affect people’s health especially risk groups, including the elderly, young children, pregnant women, and people with underlying diseases.

The Deputy Prime Minister also emphasized public communication and the effective prevention and response of the annual reoccurrence of PM2.5 particles while closely monitoring and assisting those who are affected by the problems, including the risk groups.

Meanwhile, Prawit also urged relevant government agencies to tighten law enforcement against the major sources of the particles and order the Royal Thai Police to control traffic flow to reduce the accumulation of cars in urban areas. The Thai Ministry of Transport was ordered to monitor and take action against black smoke and disqualified vehicles to help reduce the amount of PM2.5 particles.

TPN media notes the air pollution issue happens annually in Thailand and for many years the government had pledged to combat the issue, although critics claim little real movement forward has been seen.
