Eight countries in South Africa will not be allowed to enter Thailand from December 1st due to Covid-19 Omicron variant concerns

Thailand –

Due to the concern of the new ‘Omicron’ Covid-19 variant, eight countries in South Africa are not allowed to enter Thailand from December 1st, 2021, until further notice, as announced by the Thailand Public Health Department earlier this afternoon.

Today (November 27th) Doctor Opas Karnkawinpong, director-general of the Thailand Disease Control Department told the Thai press, “Even though information about the Omicron Covid-19 variant is not very clear, we have issued precautionary measurements for now.”

TPN media notes the new variant is of concern to epidemiologists due to its mutations, however, there is no hard evidence yet if the variant is vaccine evasive or more deadly.

“Traveling to Thailand from Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa and Zimbabwe, will be prohibited, from December 1st.”

“Also any registration to enter Thailand from these countries from November 27th is not allowed. We have already informed international flights and other countries. Anyone who has already been allowed can enter until December 15th but must be quarantined for 14 days regardless of vaccination status.”

“Rules for other countries in Africa bring proposed out of the eight countries are:”

  1. Test and Go is not allowed.
  2. SandBox is not allowed.
  3. Must be quarantined in places which are allowed by the Thai government only.

“There are 1,007 people from 12 countries in South Africa that have already entered Thailand recently. All of them are not infected with Covid -19.” Dr. Opas concluded.

Dr. Opas also confirmed there were no known cases of Omicron found in Thailand so far.
