Ban Bueng –

A nine-year-old boy and his six-year-old younger sister tragically drowned at a lagoon in Ban Bueng over the past weekend, according to family members and local authorities.

Emergency responders were notified of the accident over the past weekend at a lagoon in Ban Bueng.

The lagoon in question is 10 meters wide, 15 meters long, and about three meters deep.

The two young fatalities were identified by family members as a nine-year-old boy, Anucha Watayotha, and his six-year-old sister Thitaya Watayotha.

Local residents had pulled up the Thitaya from the water before medical first responders arrived at the scene. Thitaya was rushed to a local hospital, however, was tragically pronounced dead upon arrival.

Anucha’s body was later found by a rescue diver searching underwater in the lagoon.

Their grandfather, Mr. Prasan Singrat, told the associated Thai press, “I take care of all three of my grandchildren every day as their parents went to work.”

“The two children liked to play near the lagoon but today I didn’t see them. I asked locals nearby to search for them in the lagoon before they found the girl. They didn’t find the boy so I called the rescue teams for help. I am very sad and sorry this situation happened.”

Ban Bueng police were reportedly speaking further with Prasan to determine where he had been exactly when the children drowned. Police had not decided if any charges would potentially take place over the incident. The third child, who was not named, had not been swimming in the lagoon and was unharmed.

First responders believed that one child may have fallen into the lagoon by accident and ran into trouble, leading to the second child to enter the water to attempt to help, but both tragically drowning. The overall incident, however, is still under investigation and no final timeline of the events has been released.
