Most Krabi tourism operators did not agree with the Thai government’s plan on reopening for fully vaccinated tourists on November 1st, according to prominent local tourism operator Atiphot Srisukon.
Atiphot told reporters that many establishments, entertainment venues, bars, small shops on Phi Phi Island, and other tourist destinations in Mueang Krabi District had been closed for more than a year. Some shops are open, such as convenience stores, but there is no nightlife or legal alcohol sales at restaurants or bars, making the area a deserted island.
Most local entrepreneurs believed that the government’s reopening plan in November will not stir tourism business and stimulate domestic income as much as they have planned because most of the small entrepreneurs have run out of the fund and materials to reopen their businesses.
Moreover, only 151,868 people out of more than 600,000 local residents were fully vaccinated, accountable for 31.14 percent of the total population, which was still a long way to go if they wanted to welcome foreigners to the island in accordance with the government’s plan.
Atiphot said: “Most local entrepreneurs couldn’t afford to reopen their businesses. Many of them were closed already as well. We were also afraid that the number of foreign tourists would not come as much as expected. We have had domestic tourists come and complain there is absolutely nothing to do because nightlife and entertainment are still mandated closed and many business owners won’t open unless the situation dramatically improves.”
“Therefore, we do not agree with opening the country, in all areas, especially Krabi province where a number of daily infections is still found as well as deaths. That being said, we know the final decision is not ours, however, we feel this is not putting the best foot forward for Krabi.” Atiphot stated.
