The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is planning to launch a new tourism scheme titled “Unlock Thailand” to attract Asian tourists to Chiang Mai starting from November 1st.
Thanet Phetsuwan, TAT deputy governor of marketing for Asia and South Pacific, revealed that the “Unlock Thailand” will directly welcome foreign tourists to Chiang Mai without having to go through the Phuket Sandbox project, underlying the CCSA’s latest announcement to reduce the mandatory quarantine period to as low as 7 days.
TPN media notes, however, that the plan for Chiang Mai is still a proposal and needs several levels of final approval, not yet being set in stone.
The proposal will be discussed at a general meeting with the TAT, TAT’s Asian markets administration, and various commercial flight businesses on October 11th. The tourism action plan will be properly drafted before being officially introduced to the government agencies such as the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) and the Thai Cabinet for hopefully final approval later this month.
The “Unlock Thailand” plan will target two groups, namely ASEAN tourists and Asian tourists, according to Thanet, as another option since the current Phuket Sandbox was somewhat unpopular among both groups, partly due to the Covid-19 measures and travel restrictions imposed in each country.
The deputy governor stated: “Private sectors in Chiang Mai are very eager to have foreign tourists to directly fly and visit the province. Therefore, the authorities have come up with drafting and launching the new tourism program. Related tourism agencies will be discussing the matter next Monday before proposing them to the Chiang Mai governor and the provincial Public Health Department.”
“The plan will primarily aim at tourists from India, South Korea, and Singapore markets as they were one of the high-demand tourist groups who are likely to visit Thailand in the last quarter of every year. We are planning to have the plan kicked off on November 1st. India is especially of interest as they have little to no requirements to return to their countries after a holiday currently.” The deputy governor concluded.
