Driver reportedly falls asleep at the wheel, dies after colliding with trailer truck in Chonburi

Chonburi –

A 50-year-old driver has been pronounced dead at the scene after he crashed his container truck into a trailer truck in Mueang Chonburi district early this morning (September 30th).

The Mueang Chonburi Police was notified of the accident at 3:00 A.M. on Bypass Road in Nong Maidang sub-district.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find both heavily damaged trucks that had collided with each other.

The container truck driver, Mr. Wichuan Jongnom, 50, was stuck inside the cab of his vehicle. Rescue workers used a hydraulic cutter to free him but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

The trailer truck driver, Mr. Noi Thongkam, 63, told reporters, “I saw the container truck was swaying behind me before crashing into the back of my truck. I was able to keep my truck under control and stop, I was not injured during the accident.”

At this stage, Mueang Chonburi police believe based on witness statements that Wichuan had fallen asleep at the wheel leading to the tragic accident. Legal charges were not expected to be filed, police added.
