Bangkok –

The first lot of 2 million doses of Pfizer vaccines have arrived in Thailand this morning, September 29th, and will be ready for injection in children and teenagers aged 12-18 next week, according to the Thai government.

Deputy government spokesperson Traisulee Traisornkul revealed that Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul with executives from the Ministry had arrived at Suvarnabhumi International Airport at 8:00 AM. to receive the government-purchased Pfizer vaccine, which landed in Bangkok at 04:35 AM. this morning.

The government has purchased a total of 30 million doses of the mRNA vaccines so far. Am additional 6 million doses will be delivered in early October and another 8 million by the end of October. All of the 30 million ordered doses will be transferred by the end of this year, according to the deputy spokesperson.

“All of the 30 million doses will be delivered this year. And there will be a total of 8 million doses to arrive roughly every Wednesday in October. Pfizer distributors will deliver to the destinations designated by the Department of Disease Control across the country. The purchase price already includes shipping and the delivery will be door to door,” Traisulee added.

The main target group for Pfizer vaccination is children aged 12-18, accumulatively for about 5 million people nationwide. The remaining vaccines will be distributed to the general public as planned by the Department of Disease Control under the cross-vaccination method.

The Department of Medical Sciences and the FDA will carry out vaccine examination before accelerating the distribution of vaccines to targeted groups nationwide as quickly as possible. Pfizer vaccinations are expected to begin next week, according to the government’s plan.

The Thai government has stated that vaccination for students 12-18 will NOT be mandatory and requires parental consent. This is a step the government is taking before returning students to widespread public in-person schooling around the country. However, students will be allowed to return to school even if not vaccinated, although multiple safety measures will take place which is still being debated by authorities.
