Thailand to be added to the “red list” of UK’s international travel, effective Monday

Thailand will be added to the red list of the United Kingdom’s international travel lists from 4:00 AM. next Monday, August 30th, following its recently increased Covid-19 infections rate as well as concerns from the UK government over genomes (variant types) and testing.

The country is moving up from the amber list as the high rates and an outbreak of a new variant in Thailand cannot be easily identified and may cause a higher risk to the UK public health, according to UK officials.

Unfortunately, this means strict (and expensive) new rules for any UK national wanting to travel to Thailand as long as the Kingdom remains on the red list.

Additionally, passengers traveling from Thailand from August 30th onwards will be facing tighter restrictions. They must be British or Irish nationals only or must have residence rights in the UK under the red list rules.

Regardless of being vaccinated or not, travelers must take a Covid-19 test in the 3 days before they travel to England, book a quarantine hotel package (at their expense) with 2 Covid-19 tests, and complete a passenger locator form.

Once they arrive in England, they will need to isolate for 10 days in a managed quarantine facility and take a coronavirus test on or before day 2 and on or after day 8 of quarantining.

TPN media notes that although the move was expected by many, it is seen as something that could cause major problems for the Phuket Sandbox project which allows foreign nationals to enter Phuket (and other islands after seven days) without a strict hotel quarantine. This is because landing on the red list means visitors from the UK will have to do a quarantine at a government-mandated hotel for over 2,000 pounds this is expected to put a significant dent in UK visitors going to visit Thailand in the near future.

Other popular tourism destinations on the “Red List” include Seychelles, Turkey, and the Maldives.
