Thailand-
The following is a weekly feature article looking at this same time period LAST year in Pattaya and Thailand news.
This weekly feature takes a look back at news from the same period last year (and sometimes different time windows, such as six months or three months) to see how things have changed, following up on the progression of stories, as well as look at potentially broken promises or things that didn’t take place as promised in Pattaya and Thailand.
As we publish dozens of stories a week this is a quick way for people to take a look at what the biggest stories were a year ago, as chosen by our editorial team, and how they impact us today and relate to current news. They are in no particular order of importance, however, are roughly in order of publication. This week, we cover the first week of AUGUST 2020, from Sunday, August 16th, 2020 to Saturday, August 22nd, 2020.
Let’s get into the top stories from this week LAST year!
1. Thai Anti Government protesters demand political changes by September
A year later…and much is still the same. The covid-19 situation, unfortunately, is even worse and protests continue, although with more hardline protesters. The number of protesters is lower this year. This is partially fueled by more aggressive protesting and the Covid-19 situation.

2. Bangkok’s Khao San Road to fully reopen after a four-month refurbishment
Sadly, this year, it has now been closed since around April and shows no sign of opening anytime soon.

3. Final public hearing to be held tomorrow for the Pattaya Monorail project
It’s technically approved, but it may be years until we see it in action. It is not set to start until 2024!

4. Nine pro-democracy activists granted bail after being charged for sedition in an anti-government rally
One year later, some of them are back in jail and being denied bail.
5. Thai Government votes to purchase two more submarines from China for 22.5 billion baht, public outrage on social media
This was delayed, but is not canceled and just continues to be postponed and is nearly certain to eventually happen, especially once the Covid-19 situation improves.
That is it for this week. We hope everyone is doing well during these difficult times!
