Thailand-

The following is our weekly feature in which we take a look at the top developing stories and things to follow over the next week. We are focusing on what is happening for the third week of August, ending August 21st, 2021.

As we publish dozens of stories a week, this allows our readers to get a quick glimpse of the most important stories taking place in Thailand and Pattaya and to monitor and follow for the week ahead, as chosen by our editorial team.

Here are a few stories to keep your eye on and be aware of:

1. Thai Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) to review Covid restrictions next Monday

The CCSA will be reviewing Covid-19 restrictions this Monday, August 16th, 2021 in Bangkok at an “all hands on deck” meeting in Bangkok. You can review the specific plans and their thought processes in our linked article below.

Unfortunately, as Thailand continues to hit daily records around Covid-19 cases it is unlikely any significant easing will take place, despite the undeniable economical and social toll the partial lockdown measures are taking.  Additionally, hints dropped by the spokespeople for the CCSA seem to show that we are likely to stay under heavy restrictions and measures through at least September, as they feel that without them we would see an increase of roughly 20% in infections of the virus and hospitalizations until more people are vaccinated.

There is some good news-the vaccination program has notably picked up pace over the past several weeks and the number of people recovering from Covid-19 almost daily is higher or roughly the same as new cases. Additionally, in the upcoming weeks, many people are scheduled to get their second dose of the Covid-19 vaccine in Bangkok which should see the situation continue to improve there. See more below.

2. Bangkok Hospital Pattaya to start offering registration for Covid-19 vaccines for eligible foreigners starting next Monday

Things are steadily improving on the foreigner registration front for a Covid-19 vaccine as part of the government’s free rollout program, for those interested.

No, it is not open to everyone yet, it is still mainly geared at those over 60 or with certain medical conditions, but it is a step forward and progress. You can read more about the program in our article below. Additionally, also locally without requiring a trip to Bangkok, Samitivej Sriracha Hospital is offering registration, although the exact inoculation date is not clear. 3.  A wild week of protests bring concerns about more to come

If you follow our news regularly (and if you don’t, an easy way to do so is to sign up for our free daily newsletter by clicking here) you are aware that in less than a week four major protests took place in Bangkok and all four ended up with confrontations between anti-government protesters and law enforcement.

Bangkok police have stated the protests are illegal, citing Covid-19 related rules in effect that ban all mass gatherings and assemblies, and claim it is not political that they continue to disperse the protests.

Protesters, meanwhile, disagree and believe their voices are silenced. They have a variety of causes, but nearly all are calling for the immediate resignation of Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan O’Cha for what they say is his mishandling of the Covid-19 crisis.

The protesters so far have shown no sign of backing down, despite multiple legal threats, and many protest leaders have been arrested and placed in jail without bail.  The Hotpoint of the recent protests has been around Victory Monument and the Din Daeng intersection.

Be on the lookout for more possible protests over the next week and if you are in Bangkok be aware for traffic-related reasons. A quick way to follow the news at the moment about this is on our Twitter here.

That is all for this week. We hope you and your loved ones stay safe during these tough times and stay optimistic!
