6 police officials were injured, 28 protesters were arrested, and nearly 100 motorcycles were confiscated during the pro-democracy “car mob” protest yesterday, August 10th, the Metropolitan Police Bureau (MPB) announced.
MPB Deputy Commissioner Piya Tawichai stated at a press briefing that the United Front of Thammasat and Demonstration (UFTD) organized protest was considered a risk in terms of the domestic spread of Covid-19 under the Emergency Decree implementation.
According to the Deputy Commissioner, the protesters also attempted to aggressively break the police barriers. Violence and various weapons, such as stones, bricks, spikes, giant firecrackers, and ping-pong bombs, were reportedly and periodically used against police officers.
“The actions of the demonstrators caused serious damage. It can also be seen that the protesters had the intention to gather and to commit several illegal acts,” Piya stated.
During the dispersal, 6 police officers were injured and are currently undergoing medical examination at the Police Hospital. One officer was shot on his left thigh, three others were wounded by shrapnel, and another two were burned from the explosives.
The authorities have arrested 28 offenders and seized nearly 100 offenders’ motorcycles.
Meanwhile, the pro-democracy group “Taloo-Fah” has announced another gathering today, August 11th, at Victory Monument before marching to the Prime Minister’s residence at 3:00 PM.
Protesters also criticized police response to the protests yesterday, claiming the police were heavy-handed in their tactics and were indiscriminately firing rubber bullets and tear gas, as well as reports of several protesters being physically beaten by law enforcement.
