Bangkok –

Pro-democracy protest leader Jatupat “Pai Dao Din” Boonpattararaksa today, August 9th, has presented himself at the Thung Song Hong Police Station in Bangkok following an arrest warrant for violating the Communicable Disease Control Act to prevent the Covid-19 spread.

This follows the arrest of several other prominent protest leaders yesterday, August 8th, 2021. Click here to get caught up on that story.

This also followed a rowdy protest Sunday in Bangkok with over eight hours of confrontations and conflict between law enforcement and protesters, which you can read about by clicking here.

The arrest warrant was issued by the Thai Criminal Court after Pai Dao Din and his pro-democracy supporters from the “Talu Fah” group had allegedly staged a demonstration and splashed paint colors in front of the Thung Song Hong Police Station last Tuesday, August 3rd.

Pai was charged for vandalism and illegal assembly with more than five people which created chaos and risk of spreading the Covid-19 Coronavirus violating the Emergency Decree and the Communicable Disease Control Act. Bangkok, along with 28 other “maximum control provinces” is currently under strict Covid-19 rules and measures. You can refresh on what those measures are here.

Pai told reporters that he surrendered to the police today to prove his innocence and to acknowledge the allegations according to the jurisdictional process. He believed that people’s political movements and expression were a basic right that can be done in a democratic country.

He said: “I believed that police’s actions and responses against the protesters are unreasonable and excessive. Despite that, we will continue our movement and beliefs to demand the government’s resignation.”

Meanwhile, the Bangkok Police Bureau has warned that tomorrow’s “car mob” protest, organized by the United Front of Thammasat and Demonstration, is considered illegal due to several orders under the CCSA’s restriction and the Emergency Decree as Bangkok currently prohibits all forms of gatherings to prevent the Covid-19 spread. They have repeatedly warned that running a protest in a “car” or motorbike does not evade strict Covid-19 regulations around assembly.

According to the organizers, the car protest would be staged tomorrow at Ratchaprasong Intersection from 1:00 PM. onwards. TPN media will provide ongoing coverage from the protest tomorrow afternoon, especially on our Twitter account found here.

Update: As of 7:30 P.M. tonight, August 9th, 2021, protest leader Anon Nampha turned himself in at the Pathumwan Police Station following an arrest for a rally earlier this month in front of the Bangkok Art Gallery. Police claim the rally violated emergency decree rules, communicable disease laws, as well as various other laws around Covid-19.
