Fourteen food delivery drivers arrested in Nakhon Ratchasima for allegedly violating Covid-19 Emergency Decree by gambling and socializing while waiting for food orders

Nakhon Ratchasima –

A group of 14 food delivery riders were arrested in Mueng Nakhon Ratchasima district yesterday, August 4th, for reportedly violating the Covid-19 provincial preventive measures by gathering and playing cards in the bathroom of a Korat night market while waiting for food delivery orders.

The Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration, or CCSA, which has put into place strict rules around the country to stop the spread of Covid-19, has previously warned food delivery drivers not to gather, mingle, and socialize while picking up customer orders. Malls and department stores in particular in maximum control zones do not allow customers to take-away or pick up an order themselves, only delivery drivers.

The arrest followed a tip-off from a concerned citizen stating that there was a number of people who were discreetly gathering for poker and gambling at the night market. Officials from the Volunteer Defense Corps then arrived at the place for an examination.

Upon examining the market’s restrooms, a group of 14 food delivery riders was discovered allegedly acting in a gambling manner, along with cards and a certain amount of cash reportedly for gambling. The exact amount of cash was not revealed by Nakhon Ratchasima officials.

All fourteen suspects were initially taken to have Covid-19 screenings and urine tests for possible drug abuse. Among the arrested, two of them were allegedly found with marijuana and one with methamphetamine pills.

All fourteen were also taken to a Nakhon Ratchasima police station for legal proceedings with initial charges of violating the Emergency decree and being involved in illegal gambling.
