Thailand’s Ministry of Higher Education today, July 22nd, has approved, in principle, an up to 50 percent reduction of public universities’ tuition and a 5,000-baht discount for all private universities’ students, immediately effective in the first semester of 2021.

Anek Laothamatas, the Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, revealed after a discussion with Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O’Cha that the Prime Minister had approved, in principle, the measures to financially reduce the burden of education expenses of parents and students during the Covid-19 pandemic situation.

The first measure includes tuition fees reduction in public universities, stipulating reduction for 3 terms. If the tuition fees do not exceed 50,000 baht, a 50-percent reduction will be applied. If it is between 50,001 and 100,000 baht, there will be a 30-percent reduction. If the tuition exceeds 100,001 baht, a 10-percent discount will be given.

In the second measure, the government will support the reduction of 5,000 baht of tuition fees for each student in private universities. Private higher education institutions can further consider reductions in tuition fees and other financial support measures such as extending the payment period, paying installments for tuition fees, setting up a fund to support education, lending technological equipment and computer programs for students for online study, and a student dormitory discount and special welfare in case students are infected with Covid-19, etc.

The Minister added: “The measure would be implemented immediately in the first semester of the academic year 2021. It is initially estimated that about 1,750,109 students would be benefiting from the measures.”
