The Chinese Embassy in Bangkok posted earlier this evening, July 7th, 2021, announcing that a total of 2 million doses of the Sinovac Covid-19 vaccine had arrived in Bangkok this evening.
According to the Chinese Embassy, this makes a total of 14.5 million doses of Sinovac Covid-19 vaccines delivered to the country since the start of the pandemic in Thailand.
This comes as Thailand continues to battle a growing number of cases in the country while still working to obtain more vaccines to meet high demand. You can read more about the current Covid-19 situation in Thailand by clicking here.
The Chinese Embassy stated they remain committed to helping the Kingdom of Thailand in their fight against Covid-19. They also stated that Thailand and China will face hardships together, united.
The doses will be inspected for quality control purposes by the Thai Department of Public Health and relevant agencies and then be distributed by government officials. TPN notes this comes as there is still much discussion and criticism by some on social media about the Sinovac vaccine and its efficacy levels, especially against the Delta variant of Covid-19. However, Thai health officials have continually responded that “The best vaccine is the one you can get now”, although this statement has not pleased many online as well.
Thailand is planning on getting a large shipment of Pfizer later in the year to complement their own domestically produced Astrazeneca, although the exact date for this arrival is not clear other than it is planned to take place in Quarter 4. You can read more about this news by clicking here.
Meanwhile, Moderna vaccines, sought after by private hospitals for those interested in privately purchasing vaccines, will also be coming later in the year but at a far less amount than interest surveys stated. Sinopharm, like Moderna, is available for private purchase and has been pre-purchased by several cities and areas in Thailand with permission through relevant agencies, including Pattaya. However, there is also not an exact date of the arrival of these vaccines, other than “soon” which has been the answer for several weeks. You can read about that by clicking right here!
Thailand’s own locally produced Astrazeneca is also being used to supply several other countries in South East Asia and as a result, is not producing what Thai officials had originally hoped for as contract obligations with other countries have to be met, according to the Thai government.
