Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-O’Cha is expected to arrive in Phuket tomorrow, July 1st, to visit the “Phuket Sandbox” event as part of reopening the island for vaccinated foreign tourists, estimated according to the Thai Tourism Authority officials to welcome thousands of tourists by the end of the third quarter.
Government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri confirmed to the press today, June 30th, that the Prime Minister has scheduled to visit Phuket to inspect the screening system for travelers entering and leaving Phuket by land, including vehicles, travelers, and their documents as a part of the “Phuket Sandbox” island opening project at the Phuket land checkpoint.
He stated: “The Prime Minister will also chair a meeting to follow up on the progress of the measures under the “Phuket Sandbox” project before he will officially launch the “Hug Thais Hug Phuket under the “Hug Thai” project at the Central Phuket Shopping Center.”
“On this occasion, the Prime Minister will also visit the screening of arrivals and departures and welcome foreign tourists at Phuket International Airport before returning to Bangkok on the same evening,” Anucha added.
The government, specifically estimated by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), has estimated that about 100,000 foreign tourists would visit Thailand (Phuket) in the third quarter (July – September 2021). Revenues of 8.9 billion baht were also expected throughout July alone, according to the TAT.
The number of bookings of incoming passengers under the “Phuket Sandbox” scheme was currently at about 11,894 people from six airlines. Of that, about 8,281 passenger was inbound and the other 3,613 was outbound. The total flights were estimated at about 426 on average, or at about 13 flights per day. TPN media notes that these numbers did not give specific dates or timeframes and differed with some statistics given by other agencies, as these numbers were given by TAT,
