Thai PM orders serious investigation around accused corruption involving hundreds of expensive Kinnaree solar-powered street lamps installed in a Samut Prakan community

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O’Cha yesterday, June 22nd, ordered an investigation around accused corruption in local governments following six hundred Kinnaree solar-powered street lamps installed in the Racha Thewa sub-district of the Samut Prakan province.

Racha Thewa’s local administrative organization was accused of spending more than 642 million baht installing 6,773 lamp posts overall, including the 600 solar-powered ones, and only one company, Bangkok Road Lighting Co., Ltd., was involved.

Moreover, another 684 million baht budget had also been approved yesterday by the local government for an additional 720 street lamps topped with mythical Kinnaree figures. However, as of this evening, this has been “frozen” according to the local government while an investigation takes place. They stated it will resume, however, when the investigation concludes as they believe no corruption will be found. TAO chairman Songchai Nokkhamin insisted that everything about the project had been considered by the local board and was a “tourist attraction” as the community was close to the Suvannabhumi Airport.

Government spokesperson Anucha Burapachaisri spoke on behalf of the Prime Minister after the weekly Thai cabinet meeting yesterday that the government received a lot of complaints and requested a serious investigation of the lamp posts installation and whether it was done dishonestly.

“An investigation will be taken against the alleged overpaying of purchasing solar-powered street lamps. Audits must be carried out and all related data must be collected for the investigation process to ensure transparency,” Anucha concluded.
