Living sperm whale safely rescued after being washed ashore at Phuket beach

Phuket –

A living sperm whale was safely rescued after being found washed ashore at Le Pang Beach of Phuket yesterday evening, June 17th.

Jirayut Jirasunthornkul, the Choeng Thale sub-district governor, arrived at the scene after being alerted of the whale stranded on the beach where a group of 30 officials, lifeguards, villagers, hotel employees, and foreigners were wrapping towels around its body and wetting it with seawater.

The animal, which was about 3 meters long and approximately weighed more than 100 kilograms, was discovered with a few wounds and scratches all over its body and looked very fatigued from being stranded for more than an hour.

Medical officials from the Sireetarn Marine Endangered Animals Rescue Center then came to pick up the animal for treatment. Its blood would be tested to detect any kind of infections. If so, medicine and proper treatment will be provided before being relocated into a nursery pond.

Additionally, stranded sperm whales were last seen in Phuket in 2019. In Thailand, they are found in the wild in only three provinces, namely Phang Nga, Phuket, and Satun, and have been classified as legally protected wildlife.
