Thai Covid-19 Center considering easing some Covid-19 preventive measures, reviewing “Phuket Sandbox” island reopening

Bangkok –

The Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) is considering the easing of Covid-19 preventive measures in some provinces and the reviewing of the “Phuket Sandbox” island reopening, CCSA assistant spokesperson Apisamai Srirangsan stated today, June 16th.

The assistant spokesperson said that a smaller group of CCSA officials was presenting in a meeting the guidelines for welcoming vaccinated foreign tourists from low-to-medium infection risk countries to Phuket, or “Phuket Sandbox” as a pilot tourism scheme before launching a similar program in Koh Samui, Koh Phi Phi, Phang Nga, Krabi, Chonburi, Bangkok, Cha-Am, Hua Hin, Buriram, and Chiang Mai.

“Phuket authorities must fully prepare the readiness of all Covid-19 preventive procedures, from thoroughly checking the information of the traveling tourists if they are fully vaccinated or if they provide Covid-19 negative certification within 72 hours and other documents, including booking accommodation at a hotel that meets the standards of the Department of Public Health,” Apisamai stated.

Upon arrival, all tourists must pass through checkpoints, check in on tracing applications, and have a Covid-19 swab test conducted. If the process is done, they will be taken to their accommodation via a designated vehicle. They will be allowed to travel to other provinces after a 14-day stay on the island. During this time, they will be checked for Covid-19 infections several times. However, tourists can leave the country during that 14 days and do not have to stay for the entire period.

During the smaller CCSA meeting, the Phuket governor had also confirmed to ensure confidence that the residents of Phuket and the people of Thailand will be safe. Implementing the Phuket Sandbox will not cause new clusters, Assistant Spokesperson Apisamai further added.

Additionally, the meeting was also considering implementing tightening of some measures in certain provinces, particularly in some businesses like construction sites where many migrant workers were employed and some particular areas of provinces, as well as easing measures in some provinces. The CCSA will also be considering measures around restaurants proposed by the Thai Restaurant Association. The official announcement may be given this Friday after a full CCSA meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-O’Cha.
