Thai Minister of Justice visited Pattaya Prison as part of Covid-19 vaccination campaign

Pattaya –

The Thai Minister of Justice visited the Pattaya Remand Prison vaccination campaign for prisoners and officers this weekend as well as congratulating the prison for not having a single positive case of Covid-19 so far.

The Minister of Justice, Mr. Somsak Thepsutin, visited the Pattaya Remand Prison in Nong Plalai on Saturday afternoon (June 5th) on the first day of an overall Covid-19 vaccination campaign at the prison.

Joining him were the Chonburi Vice Governor Naris Niramaiwong and the Banglamung District Chief Wuttisak Singhadaechoe.

The Pattaya Remand Prison Commander Manop Chuenchom told Pattaya news reporters who attended the event, “Twelve prisons in Thailand have currently received some amount of Covid -19 vaccines to begin a gradual campaign to vaccinate our staff and prisoners.”

“We are dividing the vaccine supplies into three groups which are for our officers, elderly, and prisoners with health problems, and prisoners who are volunteers and occasionally leave the prison for various programs. For Saturday’s vaccination, we had 480 doses. We have previously vaccinated many officers, which is a Ministry of Justice policy.” Manop added, referring to a policy set by the Ministry of Justice that requires corrections officers to be vaccinated for Covid-19, one of the few mandates in the country so far.

Mr. Somsak told The Pattaya News in a brief statement, “This prison has very good Covid – 19 measurements. They don’t have any confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the prison despite testing everyone. All prisoners and officers have tested negative and the prison has very strict rules around visitors, entry of new prisoners, and quarantine.”

The Minister was very pleased with the visit to the Pattaya prison, gaining insight from officers and Commander Chuenchom on how the prison has stayed Covid free to share with other prisons. As a country, many prisons in Thailand have had major clusters of Covid-19 in the past several weeks, especially in Bangkok and Chiang Mai.
